Fill ‘Er Up?
Actress Jennifer Garner recently told Harper’s Bazaar a dirty little secret about fillers and Botox when she was asked to share her best beauty advice. "My advice is to look at the mirror less and be cautious when it comes to injecting anything into your face. Be very, very incredibly judicious and wait as absolutely long as possible to add anything. Don't think that you're 37 and you need to be shooting up your face. You don't need to wear so much make-up or have such a constant blowout."
So is it better to wait until you need filler to start using it? Or should you treat filler as a preventative measure? Ironically, the same magazine that interviewed Garner also interviewed Dr. Ava Shamban and shared this little bit of advice a few years earlier: "Research found if you take Restylane and inject it into the arm, then do electron microscopy and really look at the skin, there's the formation of more collagen," said Shamban, who explained that Restylane, a cross-linked hyaluronic acid, can trigger collagen growth by "stretching" the skin's fibroblasts, which are cells found in the connective tissue that stimulate wound healing. "The theory is that when you inject new hyaluronic acid, all of a sudden they can grab on to it and it activates collagen. I was surprised by it and didn't understand it at first, but the results persisted well after the skin metabolized the product and collagen formation occurred unequivocally."
As it turns out, injecting filler as a preventative measure can actually help you grow more collagen, making it beneficial, and not, as Garner said, something to frown upon.
